Background
Norway’s Aker Kvaerner and China’s Sinopec were contracted by SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation) for the engineering, procurement and construction of a worldscale polyolefins complex at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
Aker Kvaerner lead the construction joint venture, using their in-depth technical expertise with our proven project execution methodology. The objective was to produce a 400 000 tonne/year linear-low density polyethylene plant, using Sabic technology and a 400 000 tonne/year polypropylene plant, using Dow’s Unipol technology.
The complex will be run by Sabic subsidiary Yanbu National Petrochemical Co (YanSab). It includes a 1.3m tonne/year cracker, a 400 000 tonne/year propylene unit, a 500 000 tonne/year high-density polyethylene unit, a 700 000 tonne/year monoethlyene glycol unit and a 250 000 tonne/year benzene, toluene and xylenes unit.
